I make desserts for a living; so you can correctly infer that I have a sweet tooth and that I am BFFs with butter and confectioners’ sugar. So it takes a lot before I start to think that a recipe might be “too much.” To that end: I just have to say, once, for my own peace of mind, that these cake shakes got under my skin. I am not a fan. But. I will happily grant you that it’s a wild, wacky,- and dare I say- even whimsical idea. And the photos we got of them are incredibly interesting and eye catching.
So, if you’re looking for a special occasion, once in a blue moon, blow-my-friends-minds type dessert- this could be the perfect sugary statement. Cold, creamy ice cream gets flavored to match whatever rich, decadent cake is resting on top of the milkshake glass. Garnish the rim of the glass with a thin coating of frosting and some cake-appropriate sprinkles to complete the lavish dish. This unusual treat will sate your sweet tooth for days.
Prepare a milkshake glass: If you have any leftover frosting from making your chocolate cake, take an offset spatula and spread a thin coat of frosting around the rim of the glass. (You can substitute the frosting with chocolate syrup or honey, if you're desperate, something sticky.) Roll the rim of the glass in chocolate sprinkles to coat; set aside.
To make the milkshake: Combine the ice cream, milk, and syrup in a blender and blend until smooth. If the shake is too thick or thin, adjust the consistency with either additional milk or ice cream, respectively. Pour the into the prepared glass. Top the glass with the slice of chocolate cake and serve immediately.
